The Lifespan Of A Home Plumbing Structure

Have you ever wondered how long your plumbing system will last? The answer depends on many factors, such as the type of pipes, the quality of materials, and the maintenance.

Plumbing systems are essential to our daily lives. They provide us with water, sewerage, and drainage services. If they fail, we risk serious health problems.  Taking care of them is necessary to keep your house in good condition for many years.

With that in mind, a California repiping company will explain below how long your plumbing system may last and how to take good care of it.

The Lifespan Of A Home Plumbing Structur

Water Heaters Lifespan

Some tank water heaters can last up to 10 years, although electric models last longer than gas models.

The fuel type and model influence the lifespan, so check your water heater cautiously to get a better idea of its lifespan.

Consider the following while checking your heater:

  • As we stated before, gas water heaters can last up to 10 years.
  • Electric water heaters last between 11 and 12 years
  • Tankless water heaters last longer. In some cases, they can last over 20 years!

Some storage tank water heaters can last more than ten years if you flush them a few times. Besides, tankless water heaters also need flushings to drain mineral deposits that build up inside the tank.

Mineral deposits can damage the unit, so ensure to clean them up by flushing your water heater periodically. It is the best way to ensure a long-lasting heater that will keep your water warm or hot during cool months.

Piping Systems

Pipes’ lifespan depends on their material and the nature of the water running through them.  Check the list from our Chula Vista  repiping company below:

  • Copper Pipes: Copper’s lifespan varies depending on the type of copper and water’s pH. Unfortunately, many builders install M-type cooper to reduce costs, but these are the weakest variety. M-type copper pipes can last only 20 years, while L-type copper pipes last between 50 and 100 years due to their flexibility and thickness.
  • PVC/CPVC: These pipes can last up to 100 years if they keep a good condition. However, some PVC pipes are susceptible to extreme heat.
  • PEX: PEX piping can last 50 years.
  • Cast Iron: This type of pipe lasts around 70 to 100 years.

Sewer Lines Lifespan

Sewer lines allow running water in your home to get to the city sewer system. The most common materials for residential sewer lines are PVC and ABS.

PVC pipes are more flexible than ABS, but ABS is stronger. Both types face some obstacles underground, including shifting earth, but their lifespan can reach the 100-year mark.

Older neighborhoods usually have sewer lines made of other materials like clay, cast iron, and Orangeburg. The latter is the least durable because its lifespan lasts between 30 and 50 years. Clay pipes last 50-60 years, while cast last iron 75 to 100 years.

Ask your Fountain Valley repiping plumber about the local sewer lines materials to know which one it’s under your house.

Faucets Lifespans

Faucets are particularly resistant. If you are having issues with one of them, you may be able to solve it by replacing a worn-out washer or broken cartridge. However, faucets don’t last forever; they do need a replacement at some point.

Bathroom sink, shower, and tub faucets can last up to 20 years, while kitchen faucets usually last about 15 years.

Sinks Lifespan

Similar to other systems, your sink’s lifespan depends on the material. Consider the following:

  • Enamel Steel: Stainless steel sinks covered in an enamel coating last 5 to 10 years with frequent use.
  • Porcelain: They last between 25 and 30 years before needing a “refinish” to make them look new. However, they can last longer if you don’t want them to be “refinished.”
  • Stainless Steel: These sinks last 15 to 30 years.
  • Soapstone: These sinks can last over 100 years.

Toilets Lifespan

Toilets don’t need replacement, but their inner parts might need adjustments over time.

Some people prefer to replace their toilets to reduce water consumption and improve the bathroom’s appearance.  Nonetheless, they can last as long as you want them to.
